The House With The Yellow Door

I begin my paintings by creating initial marks on a blank white canvas, usually using charcoal. From there, I add layers of paint in various colors. I do not preplan my paintings or work from sketches. During the process of applying colors to this particular painting, I noticed the emergence of what appeared to be a yellow door on the front of a house. Typically, when a shape or color captures my attention during the development of a painting, I end up painting over it. I often say, "The part of a painting you like the most will be the part you paint over last." However, in this painting, the image of the yellow door persisted. Although the tone of the yellow color changed, the shape, size, and placement remained consistent. The surrounding elements of the painting underwent significant changes over the weeks I spent working on it.
